Liverpool Civic Place is a transformative revitalisation of Sydney’s third CBD, delivering significantly improved public amenity to one of Australia’s fastest growing and most diverse communities.

The precinct created a new civic centre for residents, encompassing a mix of council, commercial and community spaces in two towers joined by a common plaza and basement parking. The improved services on offer included council chambers and an award-winning library, incorporating community meeting spaces and a locally-focussed art gallery.

Context

Strategic Spaces were engaged in 2022 to develop a comprehensive wayfinding solution for the Liverpool Civic Place Stage One development. This included a bespoke signage and wayfinding system spanning the public domain, library, and civic tower.

The design featured an interpretive expression of the Liverpool City Council brand, using curves, shapes and materials that responded to the architecture of each building. The resulting suite of wayfinding elements maintained a cohesive visual language across the precinct, while allowing each building to retain its own distinct aesthetic and identity.

Solution

Celebrating the iconic Georges River - the defining natural attribute of the area - sign and graphic forms were inspired by the circular swirls and rings of river eddy’s as seen across the surface of the water.

At the same time site naming pays respect to the traditional Dharug custodians and provides a cultural learning opportunity. We undertook an extensive consultation process to find appropriate language for levels and rooms throughout the library and council spaces, developing a strategy that included names for flora, fauna, traditional seasons and elements, welcoming visitors to the site with a friendly Woromi (hello).
